About Proton Mail Bridge
Proton Mail Bridge lets a regular desktop mail app work with a Proton Mail account. It runs in the background, signs in to Proton, and offers your mailbox to clients such as Apple Mail, Outlook or Thunderbird through a local IMAP and SMTP server. Messages are decrypted and encrypted on your Mac, and the client connects with a separate password generated by Bridge rather than your Proton login.
The download is free, but Bridge only works with a paid Proton plan that includes Proton Mail. Proton officially supports it on macOS 15 and macOS 26 on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Mail fetched by your client is stored locally, so the disk space it uses depends on the size of your mailbox.
