Free, open-source alternatives to Evernote
A note-taking service that organises notes, attachments and web clippings into notebooks with tags, search and sync.
Evernote collects notes, files and clipped web pages into notebooks, tags them and keeps everything searchable and synced across devices. The open-source apps below cover the same core job: a general notes library with notebooks or tags, search and synchronisation between devices.
Joplin is the closest match in structure, with notebooks, to-dos, attachments and a choice of sync targets, including services you run yourself. Notesnook and Standard Notes put end-to-end encryption at the centre of their sync, and Simplenote keeps things light, with plain-text notes sorted by tags rather than notebooks. Trilium Notes arranges a large library in a tree of rich notes and attachments, with optional sync through a server you host. Their hosted services, where offered, have their own plans and limits.
