Free, open-source alternatives to iA Writer

iA Writer is a plain-text writing app built around Markdown and a deliberately bare window. Focus Mode fades everything except the sentence or paragraph you are working on, a separate preview shows the styled result, and finished text can be exported to PDF, HTML or Word. The open-source editors below share the core job of writing Markdown documents on the Mac in a quiet, uncluttered workspace.

MarkText comes closest in spirit, with its own focus and typewriter modes on a continuously rendered page. MarkEdit is a native editor that keeps the Markdown source in view with syntax highlighting, much like iA Writer's editing view. Zettlr adds a workspace of files, citations and Pandoc-based export, which suits longer documents and academic writing.
