Free, open-source alternatives to NordVPN

NordVPN is a subscription VPN service. Its apps connect a device to the company's servers in many countries, encrypting traffic on the way and hiding the user's IP address from the sites they visit.

An alternative here means another VPN service whose Mac app is open source; the network and servers behind each one are still run by a company you have to trust, and each service needs its own account. Proton VPN, Mullvad VPN and IVPN all run their own server networks and publish the source code of their Mac clients, which support WireGuard connections and a kill switch. Mullvad and IVPN sign up with an account number instead of an email address, while Proton VPN ties into a wider Proton account and offers a free tier.
