Free, open-source alternatives to Opera
A Chromium-based web browser with tab islands, a built-in VPN and ad blocker, sidebar messengers and an AI assistant.
Opera is a web browser built on Chromium and distributed under Opera's own licence agreement. On top of the engine it adds tab islands for grouping tabs, a built-in ad blocker and browser VPN, messengers in the sidebar and an AI assistant.
The open-source browsers below do the same job of everyday web browsing with extension support. Brave, ungoogled-chromium and Helium are built on Chromium, so most Chrome extensions work in them, while Firefox, Waterfox, Floorp and Zen use Mozilla's Gecko engine and Firefox add-ons. Floorp and Zen add workspaces and sidebar features closest to Opera's extras, while none of them bundles a VPN or messengers, so those come from separate apps or extensions.
