Free, open-source alternatives to Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint builds slide decks from layouts and themes, adds transitions and animations, and runs the finished presentation full screen with speaker notes. The open-source apps below do the same core job of designing and presenting slides on the Mac, and all of them open .pptx files.

LibreOffice Impress, part of the LibreOffice suite, uses OpenDocument Presentation as its native format and includes master slides, animations and a presenter console, and it saves .pptx too. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors has a presentation editor that works with Office Open XML directly and keeps a ribbon-style layout familiar from PowerPoint. Apache OpenOffice Impress is a slower-moving option that saves PowerPoint files in the older .ppt format. Fonts, embedded media and animation timing can change between apps, so rehearse an important deck in the app you will present from.
