Free, open-source alternatives to TextExpander

A text expansion tool that replaces short abbreviations with longer snippets, templates and fill-in forms as you type.

TextExpander watches what you type and swaps a short abbreviation for a longer piece of text, such as an address, a reply template or a block with fill-in fields. The open-source apps below also expand typed keywords into saved snippets in any app, using the macOS accessibility permissions to insert the text.

espanso is a dedicated text expander configured through plain files, with support for dates, forms and script output. SuperCmd and Tinycast are keyboard launchers that include keyword-triggered snippets as one feature among several, which suits people who would rather keep launcher and snippets in one app.
