Free, open-source alternatives to Moho
A 2D animation app built around vector drawing and bone rigging, so characters can be posed and moved instead of redrawn.
Moho, once sold as Anime Studio, is 2D animation software centred on rigging: you draw a character with vector tools, attach a skeleton of bones, and animate by posing it on a timeline while the software fills in the frames between. The open-source apps below share that core job of building 2D animation from keyframed artwork.
Synfig Studio works most like Moho, with vector layers that interpolate between keyframes and a skeleton system for rigging cut-out characters. OpenToonz takes a broader production approach, combining drawing tools, an exposure sheet and compositing effects, and suits mixed hand-drawn and cut-out work.
