Free, open-source alternatives to CleanShot X

CleanShot X replaces the built-in Mac screenshot shortcuts with a capture tool for areas, windows and scrolling pages, a floating preview, an annotation editor and screen recording. The open-source apps below cover that same mix of screenshots, markup and recording.

macshot, Snapzy, Shotnix, BetterShot and Screendrop all capture screenshots and recordings and open them in an editor for arrows, text and blur. Several add OCR, scrolling capture or pinned previews, and BetterShot, Shotnix and Screendrop also include a video editor with zooms and captions. Vorssaint offers the same capture tools as one module of a larger menu bar toolkit, with scrolling screenshots, annotation, text recognition and recordings with automatic zooms.
