Free, open-source alternatives to Snagit

Snagit captures screenshots and short screen recordings and opens them in an editor for arrows, text, callouts, blur and step numbers, mostly for documentation and support work. The open-source apps below share that capture-and-annotate job.

macshot, Snapzy, Shotnix, BetterShot and Screendrop each take area, window or full-screen captures, record the screen and provide markup tools. They differ in extras such as scrolling capture, OCR, redaction, upload targets and built-in video editing. Flameshot and ksnip are cross-platform screenshot tools that stick to still images: Flameshot lets you draw arrows, text and blur directly over the selected area, while ksnip opens each capture in a separate annotation editor.
