Free, open-source alternatives to DaVinci Resolve

DaVinci Resolve combines video editing on a timeline with dedicated workspaces for colour correction, visual effects and audio post-production. The open-source apps below cover its central job: cutting footage into a finished, exported video.

Kdenlive and Shotcut provide multitrack timelines with colour, keying and other effect filters, and Kdenlive adds proxy workflows for heavy footage. OpenShot offers a simpler timeline, and CartCut uses layers with keyframed animation. None of them matches Resolve's grading tools in depth, so colour-heavy work may still need a separate tool.
