Open-source alternatives to GarageBand

GarageBand is a music-making app for recording instruments and voice, playing software instruments and arranging tracks into songs. The open-source apps below share that job of composing, recording and mixing music on a Mac.

Ardour is a full digital audio workstation centred on recording, editing and mixing audio and MIDI. LMMS focuses on composing with a piano roll, patterns and built-in instruments, and Stargate is an all-in-one workstation with its own instruments, effects and wave editor.
