Open-source alternatives to Pro Tools

Pro Tools is a digital audio workstation for tracking, editing and mixing audio and MIDI, used for music as well as sound for picture. The open-source workstations below handle that record, edit and mix job on a Mac.

Ardour is the closest fit for studio work: it offers multitrack recording, non-destructive editing, a full mixer, plug-in hosting and control surface support. Stargate also records audio and MIDI and mixes them, but it is organised around patterns and its own built-in instruments and effects, so it suits music production better than engineering-heavy sessions.
